Karen Redman: KAREN REDMAN ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR LOCAL MILLENNIUM PROJECTS Friday, May 12th, 2000 - Karen Redman, Member of Parliament for Kitchener Centre, is pleased to announce, on behalf of the federal government, partial funding for J.M. Drama of Kitchener and the Canadian Women's Army Corps Veterans Memorial Fund. J.M. Drama will receive $93,812 to restore the historical County of Waterloo Registry Office. The building will be used as a centre for the performing arts. The grant will assist in providing a much-needed space for community arts groups. The C.W.A.C. will receive $9,922 from the Millennium Bureau to erect a memorial statute and plaque. It will honour the Canadian women who trained in Kitchener during the Second World War. The monument will be placed in the front of Kitchener's new armoury on East Avenue. "Each of these projects articulate a distinct aspect of our community, the monument is a testament to the sacrifices of past generations while the theatre provides a vision for the new millennium," commented Redman. "The restoration of the Registry building will certainly add to the revitalisation of our downtown core, and the Veterans Memorial is a wonderful way to commemorate the thousands of C.W.A.C. women who trained in Kitchener in the 1940s." "J.M. Drama is excited being able to mark the millennium by establishing the Registry Theatre to boost the performing arts in Kitchener and enhance a vibrant downtown," said Don Bourgeois, President of J.M. Drama. Kay Hall, President of the C.W.A.C. Veterans Memorial Fund commented, "We are delighted to hear that we are receiving a millennium grant. We are close to meeting our financial goals but more donations are still needed." The Millennium Bureau of Canada, which administers the Canadian Millennium Partnerships Program, received more than 5,000 proposals in the final application phase alone. It approved 700 projects for partial funding, bringing the total number of approved projects to over 1,700. "I would like to commend the individuals and organizations from Kitchener who worked so hard on the 16 proposals submitted by our area to the Millennium Bureau. They have clearly demonstrated our region's dedication to building the future and remembering the past," said Redman. -30- For further information please contact, Cate Murray, Office of Karen Redman, M.P., 741-2001. ![]() |
