World premiere of Brian Jackson's Wallis

Kitchener - It's one of the most famous and controversial -- love stories of the 20th century. It's the story of Wallis Simpson who is better known as the woman for whom a king gave up an Empire. J.M. Drama takes a look at the drama behind the headlines in Wallis, August 14 - 17 at 8 p.m. at The Registry Theatre, 122 Frederick Street. Tickets are available at the Centre in the Square's box office or by calling 578-1570 (or 1-800-265-8977). Demand is expected to be high so advance purchases are recommended.

This production is the world premiere of this original Canadian musical. The score is by Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Pops Conductor Brian Jackson. The book and lyrics are by Janet Fridman. Bruce Cameron, a veteran of the Waterloo Region arts scene, directs.

Jackson and Fridman wrote the musical ten years ago against the backdrop of the sale of Wallis' estate and amidst the tumultuous relationship of Charles and Diana. "We thought, where would the monarchy have been if Edward had not married Mrs. Simpson? Could one really give it up for love, or was he tricked into it by Churchill?", explains Jackson. "Timothy Findley also inspired me with his book Famous Last Words. The intrigue about that woman (as the Queen Mother referred to her) was beyond anything the general public ever knew or considered. Wallis changed history, the men she loved, including Edward, the British Monarchy and maybe the end result of World War II."

Wallis is the life story of Wallis Simpson. It moves from when her first marriage was crumbling, to her introduction to royal circles, to capturing the heart of the Prince of Wales, and finally, living out the consequences for the rest of her life. It explores questions that have perplexed many since she burst into public consciousness in the 1930's. Was Wallis motivated by ambition or love? How did this American divorcee find herself so prominent in royal circles? What was her influence over her royal lover? Did she plot with the Nazi regime to overthrow the British monarchy? Did she insist upon marriage at all costs? Wallis suggests possible answers and provokes debate.

"Once again, J.M. Drama is demonstrating leadership in the local theatre scene," stated President Don Bourgeois. "Recently, our ACTOne Festival showcased many emerging local playwrights and now we have the chance to present the world premiere of an original Canadian musical. We're excited about the results of this collaboration with Brian Jackson and Janet Fridman."

For the past 19 years, J.M. Drama has pleased audiences with a variety of theatre experiences. In addition to its productions, it is community theatre organization that makes a difference. For example, it created and operates The Registry Theatre as a community service project to serve the needs of the performing arts community in Waterloo Region.
