The Registry Theatre proves to be a smash hit!

KITCHENER - Built to fill a pent up demand, The Registry Theatre is exceeding expectations. In a report on its first year of operations to the City of Kitchener's Community Services Committee, J.M. Drama reported the theatre is being used on average every other day.

When it opened in January 2001, it was projected the theatre would be booked 100 - 125 times over 12 months. Demand was so great for an affordable, intimate theatre that there were 100 bookings in its first eight months. The trend is continuing with 180 confirmed bookings in the theatre's first full year of operation (September 2001 - August 2002).

"We created The Registry Theatre because we knew a need existed for a community theatre," commented J.M. Drama president Don Bourgeois. "The need definitely exists. If anything we underestimated how many different users were out there. We're pleased at how quickly the theatre has become an integral part of our local cultural fabric."

It truly is a community theatre. There has been a broad range of groups that have benefited from the affordable rental rate of $125 per day. It's been used for plays, music performances, meetings and recitals for students. Some of the groups that seized the opportunity provided by The Registry Theatre were: NUMUS, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, Notes by Amy, Nash the Slash, Paradox Theatre, and J.M. Drama.

Due to the need to build a new stage, the theatre posted a $4 500 deficit in its first eight months. J.M Drama covered this deficit. It is on course to break even for September 2001 - August 2002. Originally, the theatre borrowed a stage. It was decided that it would be better to construct a permanent stage floor. Some of the other capital improvements since the theatre's opening included a house lights dimming system and acoustical insulation to reduce street noise.

The Registry Theatre is a charitable project by J.M. Drama. In addition to its frequent productions, J.M. Drama makes a difference by offering scholarships to performing arts students and providing sponsorship funds to schools so their students can participate in the performing arts.
